There was a time not so long ago when the prospect of working your office job from home full time was unheard of. But ever since you-know-what (it’s never mentioned enough) the concept of hybrid-working has now become common in the workplace. And whilst some get to enjoy the luxury of getting up 5 mins before their day starts, many companies have now returned to the full 5-day in-office work week. Meaning it’s now more important than ever to ensure employees are primed for full efficiency the minute they walk through the doors.

The way your workspace is designed can have a big impact on productivity, mood, and overall enjoyment at work.  If you're looking to create a space that's both functional and inviting, there are a few key things to keep in mind:

1. Design for productivity

When designing your work zone it's important to keep productivity in mind.  This means creating a space that is conducive to focus and concentration.  There are a few things you can do to make your space more productive, such as:

  • Creating quiet zones. Quiet zones are areas where employees can go to get away from the hustle and bustle of the office. These zones should be well-lit and free of distractions.
  • Providing comfortable seating. Employees should have comfortable seating that allows them to work for sustained periods of time without becoming uncomfortable.
  • Installing adjustable desks. Adjustable desks allow employees to work in a variety of positions, which can help to prevent fatigue and back pain.

2. Design for collaboration

In addition to productivity, it's also important to design your office for collaboration.  This means creating spaces where employees can easily work together on projects.  There are a few things you can do to encourage collaboration, such as:

  • Creating open floor plans. Open floor plans allow employees to easily communicate and collaborate with each other.
  • Providing collaboration areas. Collaboration areas are areas where employees can go to work on projects together.  These areas should be well-lit and equipped with the necessary tools and resources.
  • Encouraging team-building activities. Team-building activities can help to foster a sense of camaraderie and collaboration among your employees.

3. Design for comfort

Employees should feel comfortable in their work environment.  This means providing comfortable seating, adjustable desks, and a temperature that's just right.  It also means creating a space that's free of noise and distractions.

4. Design for creativity

Creativity is important in many industries, so it's important to design your office in a way that encourages creativity. This means providing plenty of natural light, comfortable seating, and access to art and music.

5. Design for sustainability

Sustainability is important in today's world, so it's important to design your office in a way that is environmentally friendly.  This could mean using recycled materials, energy-efficient appliances, and low-flow toilets.

By taking into account these factors, you can create an office that is both functional and inviting. Your employees will be more productive and enjoy their work more if they have a space that they love to work in.
